5 Tips for mindful holidays

The holidays can be stressful and for some downright depressing.  we can get so caught up with the expectations of the holiday season that we get lost and forget to enjoy it.  This year I challenge you to resist the undercurrents of the season that threaten to sink you beneath expectations, consumerism and gluttony.  Here are some tips to help you survive the holiday season and be mindful.

5 tips for mindfulness during the holidays
  1. Practice Radical Self Care.  You can’t pour from an empty cup.  When you take care of yourself you are better able to take care of those who depend of you.  You will have more energy to enjoy special moments.  As the demands on your time increases so should the amount of time you spend practicing self care.  You should have a daily self care ritual. These can include a decadent body wash, 5 minutes of quiet time or a nightly foot soak with essential oils. Find what works for you and energize your body mind and soul.
  2. Mindful Eating.  Holidays are a time when many fall out of their healthy eating habits.  It’s okay to enjoy some holiday treats. With a little effort and mindful eating you can avoid overeating and over indulgence. Mindful eating is the opposite of mindless eating.  Making a conscious choice on what you eat.  Then enjoying the act of eating it.  Enjoy the smells, the texture, the way it feels on your tongue and in your mouth. Savor the flavors.  Let eating be an experience.  You will notice that you eat less and enjoy what you eat more.  Slow down and enjoy the moment.
  3. Mindful Exercise. We often slow down or completely stop exercising during the holidays.  Although it can be nice to slow down it is important to maintain some level of activity.  Go for a walk, see the lights in your neighborhood, practice yoga at home or play with some kids or animals. Even though you may not make it to the gym if you do activities that you enjoy your body will be thankful and so will you.
  4. Mindful Service. Helping other feeds your soul.  During the holidays it is important to consider the least among us.  It can me easy to get wrapped up in your own life and forget that many are not as fortunate as us.  You can purchase a toy for a child, volunteer with the sick or homeless, or invite someone to your holiday celebration.  A simple act can go a long way. 
  5. Be Kind. Because the holidays are stressful it’s easy to forget our manners and be short or snippy with those nearest to us.  Above all BE KIND, think before you speaks and consider the how your actions will affect others.  A pause and forethought can save you from tears and drama.
